What Is the Function of a Slurry Pump Shaft Sleeve?

Apr 08,2026

The slurry pump shaft sleeve is a key part of the pump assembly. Its main functions are to protect the pump shaft, reduce wear, and extend equipment life.

1. Protects the pump shaft
Slurry pumps handle highly abrasive media containing solid particles (e.g., mineral slurry, coal slurry). The shaft sleeve acts as a shield around the pump shaft, directly withstanding particle erosion and preventing rapid wear or corrosion of the shaft.

2. Lowers maintenance costs
Shaft sleeves are typically made of wear‑resistant alloys with high hardness and are replaceable. When the sleeve wears out, only the sleeve needs to be replaced instead of the entire pump shaft, significantly reducing costs.

3. Assists sealing
The shaft sleeve works together with mechanical seals or gland packing to prevent slurry leakage into the bearing housing. For example, in designs with an expeller plus gland packing, the sleeve helps stabilize sealing chamber pressure and minimize medium leakage.

4. Reduces vibration and eccentricity
Precision machining ensures concentricity between the sleeve and the pump shaft, avoiding vibration and bearing damage caused by shaft eccentricity.

When to replace the shaft sleeve:

Surface grooves deeper than 2 mm appear.

Leakage continues at the packing area even after replacing the packing — this indicates the sleeve likely needs replacement.
